The effort aims to improve the quality of public transport services while cutting emissions and reducing urban pollution.
According to the Ha Noi government’s plan, the transition is being implemented systematically, with the goal of building a modern and sustainable public transport system.
On April 23, 2026, Ha Noi deployed 11 electric buses on route 90, followed by 16 more on routes 36 and 74 the following day.
With the addition of 27 electric buses, the total number of electric and clean-energy buses in the city’s fleet has reached 726, comprising 587 electric buses and 139 CNG buses.
Electric buses currently account for 30.1% of the total subsidised bus fleet, while CNG buses make up 7.1%. Together, electric and clean-energy buses represent 37.2% of the city’s subsidised fleet.
According to the plan, by April 30, 2026, Ha Noi will deploy an additional 95 electric buses across six routes. Once complete, the city’s electric and clean-energy fleet will reach 821 buses – 682 electric and 139 CNG – accounting for 42.1% of the total subsidised fleet.
Thai Ho Phuong, Director of the Ha Noi Traffic Management and Operation Centre, said that by the end of 2026, the city is expected to deploy a further 30 electric buses on two additional routes.
By then, the total electric and clean-energy fleet will rise to 851 buses – 712 electric and 139 CNG – representing 43.6% of the total fleet.
Notably, this figure significantly exceeds the target set in the transition roadmap, which called for electric and clean-energy buses to make up 20-23% of the fleet by the end of 2026.
Exceeding this target reflects Ha Noi’s strong commitment to advancing a sustainable transition in public transport.
Expanding the use of electric buses not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower noise levels, and improve air quality, but also reinforces Ha Noi’s vision of a modern and efficient public transport system.
This is also an important step toward meeting emission reduction commitments and building a cleaner, greener capital in a new period.
With these encouraging results, Ha Noi is cementing its role as a pioneer in the green transition of public transport, advancing a vision of smart and sustainable urban development.
