Ngan Thuy, a mountainous commune in Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province, is home to a large population of Van Kieu ethnic people. In recent years, the commune has risen into a bright spot in poverty reduction for Quang Binh province.
Secretary of the commune’s Party Committee Nguyen Van Hung attributed the locality’s achievements of poverty reduction to its efforts to promote the potential and strengths of the land, improve infrastructure, and encourage locals to farm wet rice.
Ngan Thuy is rewarded with many beautiful caves, streams, and grasslands, making it an attractive place for those who want to explore the wild and pristine beauty of nature. Taking the advantages, Van Kieu ethnic people in the commune have been provided with instructions from travel businesses on doing tourism, contributing to generating more income for them.
In A Doi commune, Huong Hoa district, Chairman of the commune People's Committee, Ho Xa Cach said that the local leaders always pay great attention to finding ways to help locals climb out of poverty.
The local authorities have encouraged locales to develop the cultivation area of cassava and rubber trees, afforestation, and raise poultry farming. Thanks to appropriate directions, the livelihood of people in A Doi has changed significantly.
Quang Nam province is home to more than 140,000 ethnic minority people, accounting for 9.4% of the total population, bigger than its neighbouring provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Tri.

In the 2016-2020 period, the province invested more than 9.35 trillion VND to improve infrastructure and economic models and renovated production methods in a bid to alleviate poverty among ethnic minorities.
Le Quang Trung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuoc Son district, said that in recent years, the district has invested in programs and projects to develop the infrastructure system, support product development, and expand farming models, which have initially brought encouraging results in promoting sustainable development of the household economy.
The Quang Binh provincial Party Committee recently held a conference in mid-May 2022 to discuss socio-economic development solutions in border communes, living areas of ethnic minority groups, and mountainous regions.
At the conference, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Vu Dai Thang outlined seven tasks, focussing on shifting economic structure, bringing into play the locality’s advantages, developing high-quality crop growing areas, duplicating effective production models, and building high-value products.
In a similar effort to alleviate poverty, Quang Tri province has stepped up the implementation of the national target programme on socio-economic development in ethnic minority inhabited and mountainous areas over the 2021-2025 period, with priority being given to connecting traffic routes from communes to villages, setting up agricultural and forestry material areas, constructing water projects to facilitate the production and daily life of residents.
According to Secretary of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee Phan Viet Cuong, the province has set five important tasks for the coming time, including forest protection and development, biodiversity conservation in harmony with economic development, natural disaster prevention and climate change adaption, new rural-styled building, and infrastructure system improvement.
Attention will also be paid to preserving and developing traditional crafts, boosting community-based and ecological tourism, particularly in growing areas of ginseng and medicinal herb.
