With the application of modern technology, one of these historical sites has been transformed into an impressive destination, offering visitors new experiences while evoking a deep sense of national pride.
Located along Route 20 Quyet Thang in Phong Nha Commune, Quang Tri Province, the Command Cave (also known as the NH Depot or Seven-Level Cave) is a natural cave system comprising seven levels. During the resistance war against the US, it was converted into a strategic depot, serving as a logistics hub, a forward command post, and a field medical station — playing a vital role on Route 20 Quyet Thang and the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Recently, with investment from enterprises, and support from the Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park Management Board, the Command Cave has been transformed into a historical attraction featuring model displays and wartime artefacts right inside the cave. Visitors can explore the “secret route” — a hidden transport path through the forest — exhibition areas showcasing relics and documentary films, as well as the seven-level cave itself, which once served as a command post, logistics depot, communications station, and a field medical and training area for Truong Son soldiers.
The highlight of this tourism product is its integration of 9D virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, allowing visitors to “transform” into Truong Son drivers on a model of the legendary ZIL-130 truck, experiencing the smoke, shaking, and heat of wartime conditions along the Truong Son Trail. According to T20 Quyet Thang, the tour operator, this product not only offers a unique travel experience but also spreads the spirit of “returning to the roots” – honouring generations who once fought on the Truong Son battlefield – while fostering patriotism among young people.
Today, the Command Cave has become a destination of choice for organisations and groups on journeys of gratitude and patriotic education.
Recently, during their visit to Quang Tri – the “land of fire” – members of the A-350 flight team under Flight Division 919 of Vietnam Airlines spent time learning about, and paying tribute to, the heroic history of Route 20 Quyet Thang and the legendary Truong Son–Ho Chi Minh Trail.
In the solemn, history-filled atmosphere of the Command Cave, the A-350 flight team’s party cell (under the Party Committee of Flight Division 919) held a ceremony to admit new party members. According to representatives of the cell, the ceremony was not only a sacred milestone in each individual’s life but also a continuation of the nation’s heroic legacy, nurturing pride and the aspiration for progress and international integration among today’s generation.
During a recent “Return to the Roots” journey at the Legendary Truong Son Trail – Command Cave Eco-Tourism Site, youth union members from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism enjoyed memorable experiences such as “walking amid wartime bombs” — an evocative activity that deepened their appreciation of the nation’s hard-won peace.
Le Minh Duc, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, shared that following this journey, the ministry’s young cultural ambassadors will continue to spread its meaningful message among other young people. Through this, they hope to raise awareness of a destination that is not only a tourist site but also a “red address” — a symbol of revolutionary tradition — along the legendary Truong Son Trail.
On September 27, in Ha Noi, within the framework of the 2025 Viet Nam Tourism Awards ceremony, the tourism product “Legendary Truong Son Trail – Command Cave” was honoured in the “Creative Tourism Product” category. This recognition acknowledges innovation in promoting the value of historical relics and affirms Quang Tri’s new direction of integrating modern technology with the sustainable preservation of cultural and tourism resources. It contributes to diversifying tourism products while conserving and promoting cultural and historical values in line with sustainable tourism development.
