Viet Nam and Germany enhance scientific and technological cooperation

On the afternoon of January 6 (local time), Nguyen Dac Thanh, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, held a meeting with Marcus Pleyer, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, to discuss the direction of scientific, technological, and innovation cooperation between Viet Nam and Germany in the coming period.

During the meeting, State Secretary Marcus Pleyer stated that the coalition government of Chancellor Friedrick Merz places great importance on focusing resources on key technologies to serve economic growth and strengthen Germany’s and Europe’s technological sovereignty through the reform and establishment of a new Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, expanding its scope of management to the space sector.

Introducing Germany’s high-tech agenda, Marcus Pleyer highlighted six key technology areas that Germany prioritises for development in the coming period, including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, microelectronics and semiconductors, quantum technology, and environmental and climate technology, along with several new foundational technologies.

For his part, Ambassador Nguyen Dac Thanh stated that Viet Nam has merged the Ministry of Science and Technology with the Ministry of Information and Communications, identifying science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation as crucial drivers for the country’s rapid and sustainable development.

Ambassador Nguyen Dac Thanh provided an overview of Viet Nam’s major policies and guidelines in the field of science, technology, and digital transformation, emphasising Resolution No.57 of the Politburo and the Law on Science and Technology of 2025, which identify science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as top strategic breakthroughs.

Accordingly, Viet Nam is currently implementing 11 strategic technology groups prioritised for development, with many similarities to key technology areas prioritised by the German government, creating a favourable foundation for promoting bilateral cooperation in the future.

During the meeting, both sides assessed the recent positive results of Viet Nam-Germany cooperation in science and technology through joint research programs, business support, and high-quality human resource training. Both sides agreed to continue working closely together to prepare the content for the Viet Nam-Germany Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation, which is scheduled to be held in Viet Nam in 2026.

The two sides also exchanged and proposed priorities for future cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, such as: promoting science, technology, and innovation cooperation as a key pillar in elevating the Viet Nam-Germany Strategic Partnership; and promoting policy dialogue on science, technology, and innovation.
