21-year-old student crowned Miss Vietnam 2012

Nhan Dan – Dang Thu Thao, a 21-year-old beauty from Can Tho, was crowned Miss Vietnam 2012 at the Tien Son Sports Palace in Da Nang on August 25.

Thao, a student from Tay Do University in Can Tho city, impressed the judges and audience with her excellent answer in response to the question, 'Why do people always follow Miss Vietnam?' She said that the winner of a pageant that honours the beauty of women throughout the world symbolises the perfect woman, and that is why people will always follow her.

Duong Tu Anh and Do Hoang Anh, both from Hanoi, were the contest's first and second runners up.

Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho Anh Tuan affirmed that Miss Vietnam 2012, themed ‘Confluence and Spreading Beauty,’ is the only national beauty pageant to be held this year. It aimed to hounour the talent, spiritual and intellectual beauty of Vietnamese women, while promoting Vietnamese culture and people.

The three-hour finale, which was broadcast live on Vietnam Television Channels 1 and 4, featured the 40 contestants competing in ‘Ao Dai’ (Vietnamese traditional long dress), swimsuit and evening gown shows.

The jury also presented awards for other categories including Miss Talent, which went to Nguyen Thi Xuan Trang from Da Nang; Miss Sea, Ninh Hoang Ngan from Ho Chi Minh City; and Miss Ao Dai, Vu Ngoc Anh from Hanoi. Nguyen Thi Ha from Thanh Hoa and Phan Thi Mo from Tien Giang won the Miss Beautiful Skin and Miss Beautiful Hair awards, respectively.

Initiated in 1988 by the Tien Phong newspaper, the Miss Vietnam pageant is held biennially and always attracts a lot of public attention.
