The exhibition showcases photos and objects relating to the old-time habit of Vietnamese people including lime pots, spittoons, betel quids, betel trays and mortars in different shapes and materials.

According to Deputy Director of Vietnam’s Southern Women Museum (VSWM), Nguyen Hien Linh, the tradition of betel and areca chewing originated from the era of the Hung Kings (approximately between 2897 BC and 1550 BC). It was an indispensable offering in traditional Vietnamese ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and religious rituals.

The exhibition was held by the VSWM and the Ninh Thuan province’s Cham Culture Research Centre to introduce to the public to a longstanding tradition while upholding Vietnamese cultural values.

The event will last until November 31.
