Fisheries sector launches peak campaign against smuggling and trade fraud

The Directorate of Fisheries and the Department of Fisheries Surveillance under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment are currently implementing a high campaign to combat smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, and violations of intellectual property rights in the fisheries sector, as outlined in Plan No. 624/KH-TSKN.

This campaign underscores the authorities’ strong commitment to protecting the fisheries sector and consumers, with clearly defined goals.

Accordingly, The Directorate of Fisheries and the Department of Fisheries Surveillance will focus on inspecting the production, trading, and use of aquatic breeds, feed, environmental treatment products, as well as any banned chemicals and antibiotics used in aquaculture.

These are prominent issues prone to violations, directly affecting product quality and consumer health. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities are being strictly punished, with the guiding principle: “Handle one case to set an example for an entire region or sector.”

At fishing ports, the issuance of certificates and verification of the origin of wild-caught seafood, along with food safety on vessels and at port facilities, are being closely monitored. At border gates, imported, temporarily imported, re-exported, transshipped, or transited aquatic products through Viet Nam's territory are also subject to heightened inspection in accordance with regulations.

Local fisheries management and fisheries surveillance agencies, along with other relevant authorities, have been instructed to coordinate closely with the Directorate of Fisheries in implementing the plan and addressing violations.

With nationwide implementation, particularly in provinces where violations are complex and frequent, this campaign against smuggling, trade fraud, and counterfeit activities in the fisheries sector is expected to bring about meaningful changes, contributing to the development of a more sustainable and transparent fisheries industry.
