The two projects are expected to generate significant momentum for the northern mountainous province’s economic development in the years ahead.
The floating solar power project on the Son La hydropower reservoir will have an installed capacity of 800MW, with total investment estimated at approximately 17 trillion VND (645 million USD).
The project will cover approximately 1,139.5 hectares of water surface and 60.5 hectares of land, located in Muong La and Chieng Lao Communes.
Its main components include floating platforms integrated with solar panels, power transmission cables across the reservoir, an operations management centre, a 500kV substation, and around 10km of 500kV transmission lines.
Once completed, the project is expected to supply approximately 1,250 GWh of electricity annually to the national grid, thereby maximising the productive potential of the Son La hydropower reservoir’s water surface.
According to the plan, construction will be completed in four phases, each with an installed capacity of 200 MW.
Phase I is expected to commence commercial operation in 2027, Phase II in 2028, Phase III in the second quarter of 2029, and Phase IV in the fourth quarter of 2029.
The buoy and plastic products manufacturing plant will be developed in Chieng Lao Commune, covering an area of approximately 3,833 square metres, with a total investment of 317 billion VND (12 million USD) and a planned production capacity of 758,000 units per year.
Under the plan, the project will be constructed from the second to the fourth quarter of 2026.
Speaking at the ceremony, Son La Province Chairman Nguyen Dinh Viet stated that the two projects are significant in advancing the province’s strategy for industrial development, renewable energy expansion, and the effective use of the Son La hydropower reservoir’s water surface.
The projects are also expected to drive investment attraction, economic growth, job creation, and increased local budget revenues.
He called on the relevant authorities to work closely with investors to ensure both projects are implemented on schedule.
