Khmer language centre launched in Ho Chi Minh City

The Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association (VCFA) held a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on November 7 to launch the Khmer language centre, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the National Day of Cambodia (November 9, 1953- 2015).

Located at Pho Minh Pagoda in Ward 1 of Go Vap district, the centre will be a place for Vietnamese officers, business men and women, and students to learn Khmer language as well as the customs, habits and culture of the Khmer ethnic people.

The establishment of the centre is expected to contribute to encouraging the Khmer community to boost socio-economic development, maintain political security and ensure social order and safety as well as promote the values of Khmer culture and tradition.

The teaching council comprises of former professionals and teachers from the VCFA, venerable from Khmer pagodas as well as those who possess a deep understanding on the Khmer ethnic group.

Addressing the launching ceremony, representative of Cambodian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City said that the launching of the Khmer language centre will strengthen the solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia as well as enhance the mutual understanding between the two peoples.

He also expressed his belief that the two sides would continue to further promote the long-term traditional relationship as well as bring the comprehensive and sustainable co-operation between the two nations to a new height, significantly contributing to peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region and the world.

Also on the occasion, the Cambodian Cultural Week in Vietnam is taking place in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang from November 8-14.

In addition to the working visit of leaders of Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Arts in Vietnam, the week will feature a wide variety of arts programmes put on by Cambodian artists and an array of Cambodian traditional folk games.

The event will introduce Vietnamese people to the unique identities of traditional culture and arts of the neighbouring country, contributing to enhancing cultural exchange as well as strengthening the solidarity and friendship between the two peoples.
