PM urges handling of Dak Mi 1 hydropower scaffolding collapse

Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son on December 31, 2024 signed an official dispatch of the Prime Minister, asking for urgent measures to fix an incident at the Dak Mi 1 Hydropower Project in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, which left three dead and two missing earlier the same day.

The document, sent to the National Steering Committee for Civil Defence, the Ministers of Industry and Trade, and Construction, and the Chairperson of the provincial People’s Committee, noted that at around 3 a.m., a scaffolding collapse occurred during nighttime construction on the Dak Mi 1 dam.

Upon hearing the incident information, the Prime Minister sent his profound condolences to the families and relatives of the victims.

To promptly address its aftermath and implement measures to prevent similar accidents, he directed the Chairperson of the provincial People's Committee to work with the national steering committee and relevant agencies to urgently mobilise the necessary forces and resources to search for the missing, and provide immediate and timely treatment to the injured. Additionally, efforts should be made to visit, extend condolences to, and support the families of the victims in accordance with regulations.

The Ministry of Construction was urged to coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the provincial People's Committee to investigate the cause of the incident, direct the immediate settlement of the problems, and take measures to ensure the safety of construction projects. Any violations of safety regulations in construction activities, if found, must be strictly handled.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry and Trade was tasked with strengthening state management in the hydropower sector, enhancing monitoring, inspection, and supervision, and promptly addressing violations in the investment, construction, and operation of hydropower plants in accordance with law. Strict actions must be taken against cases of non-compliance with labour safety regulations to ensure no similar accidents in the future.
