Promoting tourism cooperation between Vietnamese localities and China’s Yunnan Province

There is significant potential for tourism cooperation between Vietnamese localities and Yunnan Province, China, particularly through “red tourism” programmes that explore revolutionary history. These activities serve as a practical means to strengthen social foundations, enhance exchanges, and foster mutual understanding between the people of the two countries.

On June 22, in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China, the Communication Department of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee, in collaboration with the South Asia–Southeast Asia Regional International Communication Centre of Yunnan Province, the Yunnan Tourism Planning Research Institute, and the Institute for Asia–Pacific Studies at the Viet Nam Academy of Social Sciences, held a programme to introduce the red tourism study route titled “Travel Yunnan – Discover Viet Nam.”

The organisation of the event announcing the outcomes of the “Tracing President Ho Chi Minh’s Footsteps in Yunnan” initiative, along with the introduction of the “Travel Yunnan – Discover Viet Nam” red tourism study route, is a meaningful activity aimed at implementing the important common understanding shared by the leaders of the two parties and countries on deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Speaking at the event, Feng Jun Yang, Deputy Head of the Communication Department of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee, stated that organising red tourism study trips to revolutionary historical sites and cultural heritage locations in both countries has helped enhance exchanges between the youth of the two nations, provided renewed momentum, and enriched the cultural depth of the strategically significant China–Viet Nam Community with a Shared Future.

The programmes “Tracing President Ho Chi Minh’s Footsteps in Yunnan” and the two-way red tourism study route “Travel Yunnan – Discover Viet Nam” are vivid examples of the enduring revolutionary traditions shared by the two nations. This is especially meaningful as 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two counties and is also the “Viet Nam–China Year of People-to-People Exchanges”, featuring the special milestones of the 135th birth anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh and the 85th anniversary of his revolutionary activities in Kunming.

Also speaking at the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Duong Van Huy, Director of the Centre for Viet Nam–China Relations Studies under the Institute for Asia–Pacific Studies at the Viet Nam Academy of Social Sciences, noted that China is the largest source of international tourists to Viet Nam. In the first four months of 2025, approximately 1.95 million visits were made by Chinese tourists to Viet Nam. Viet Nam is also a major destination for Chinese tourists. These figures reflect the growing interest among people in both countries in exploring and experiencing each other’s cultures.

At the event, representatives from tourism companies of both countries also presented cooperation opportunities and tourism products, especially “red tourism” routes that highlight the revolutionary heritage of each country.
