The information was mentioned at a seminar entitled “Sustainable urban planning and development in the North Central and Central Coast” held in Dong Ha City, Quang Tri Province, on July 14.

The event was jointly organised by the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission, the Ministry of Construction, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee.

The North Central and Central Coast region has seen strong progress in urban construction and development with 210 urban areas in 14 provinces. Cities in the North Central and Central Coast region have been directly and negatively affected by climate change in recent years. Urbanisation and high urban population density has also exacerbated the impact of climate change in coastal provinces and cities.

Alongside potentials and advantages, the region also faces challenges as 12 out of the 14 provinces in the region are expected to be heavily affected by climate change, including inundation, flooding, and reduction of water resources due to saline intrusion.

Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission Nguyen Duc Hien emphasised that localities in the region need to include disaster risks in urban planning while policies for urban planning must make calculations regarding climate change issues.
