Viet Nam saved approximately 463,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to more than 1 billion VND (approximately 37,900 USD) during one hour of lights off on the evening of March 28 in response to Earth Hour 2026, according to the National Power System and Market Operation Company (NSMO).

Earth Hour, first launched in 2007, is an annual global environmental event that has since attracted participation from nearly 200 countries and territories.

In Viet Nam, the programme is organised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in coordination with the WWF, with participation from all provinces and cities, as well as a large number of citizens and businesses.

Over the years, the national power utility EVN has consistently been one of the key organisations actively involved in implementing the campaign, contributing to raising public awareness of economical and efficient energy use.

The year 2026 marks the 18th time Viet Nam has taken part in the campaign. This year’s activities take place against a backdrop of significant volatility in the global energy market.

Military conflicts and geopolitical tensions in various regions, particularly in major energy production and transit hubs, have directly affected the supply of oil, gas, and coal on international markets.

These factors have not only increased the risk of supply disruptions but have also caused considerable price volatility, placing considerable pressure on countries reliant on energy imports, including Viet Nam.

In this context, economical and efficient energy use has been identified as one of the key solutions to mitigate supply risks, reduce production costs, enhance business performance, and strengthen the economy’s competitiveness.

At the same time, it is a crucial factor in ensuring national energy security and promoting sustainable development.

The Earth Hour 2026 campaign highlights the role of innovation in energy use, with the aim of advancing the green transition and sustainable development.

Accordingly, EVN has proactively carried out a wide range of communication campaigns across digital platforms, while also strengthening direct outreach to communities, public agencies, and businesses in order to raise awareness and encourage electricity-saving behaviours.

Over the years since its introduction, the Earth Hour campaign in Viet Nam has gone beyond being a symbolic event, gradually transforming awareness into concrete action within the community.

What began as simply switching off lights for one hour has evolved into lasting habits of economical and rational energy use among public agencies, businesses, and households in everyday life and in the workplace.
