Vietnam, Ecuador to increase political dialogue

NDO/VNA—Vietnam and Ecuador agreed to strengthen political dialogue through high-level visits during the third political consultation between the two countries in Quito from December 1-2.

The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said on December 2 that the two sides were also considering opening embassies in Quito and Hanoi.

The two countries agreed to promote trade and investment through an agreement between the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade) and Ecuador’s Institute for the Promotion of Exports and Investments, as well as with the participation of the private sectors of both countries.

At the same time, they will step up bilateral technical cooperation in such areas as energy and technology parks in Ecuador’s norther city of Yachay.

During the meeting, Vietnam expressed appreciation for Ecuador's proposal to engage in the cooperation mechanism of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as Ecuador’s serving as chair of the group of developing and emerging nations (G77) from January 2017, the ministry said.

It added that Vietnam’s military-run telecom group Viettel had shown its interest in the telecommunication sector in Ecuador.

Vietnam and Ecuador established diplomatic ties in 1979. Vietnam is currently one of Ecuador’s most important trade partners.

The Vietnamese Foreign Ministry delegation to the event was led by Deputy Minister Dang Dinh Quy. Earlier, the delegation paid an official visit to Paraguay and held its second political consultation with the country.

After Ecuador, the deputy minister is scheduled to visit Argentina.
