Construction of the project began in 2021 at a total investment of 2.2 billion USD. The plant comprises two generating units with a combined installed capacity of over 1,300MW.
The project was developed under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, with VAPCO as the project developer.
The project utilises ultra-supercritical (USC) boiler technology, which experts regard as the most advanced approach currently in use in coal-fired thermal power plants in Viet Nam.
Compared to conventional coal-fired technology, USC boilers consume less fuel and produce lower carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to cleaner power generation.
The project is expected to create more than 250 permanent jobs and contribute approximately 1 trillion VND (around 38 million USD) to the state budget each year.
Speaking at the ceremony, Go Fukushima, General Director of VAPCO, stated that the plant is capable of supplying around 3.3% of Viet Nam’s total national power output, and will play a vital role in ensuring a stable electricity supply, particularly for the northern provinces.
At the event, Ha Tinh Chairman Phan Thien Dinh affirmed that the inauguration of the Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant reflects the province’s strong commitment to maintaining a favourable investment environment.
