Leaving deep sadness in relatives, colleagues and fans nationwide, the talented music composer passed away after suffering heart attack.

Thuyen, whose real name is Nguyen An Thuyen, was born on August, 15 in 1949 in Quynh Luu, Nghe An province. He worked at Military Zone 4, then was sent to study at the Hanoi Conservatory. In 1992 he worked at the Military College of Culture and Arts (now the Military University of Culture and Arts) and became the school’s principal for many years.

For over a decade, An Thuyen often composed music at night when his mind was completely free from the work of a manager. Persons, fates, bridges, ferries, rivers, and more all have been a source of inspiration for his compositions. Music notes and lyrics came to him prolifically. This explains why it takes him only about an hour to write his impressive songs, including “I opt for this way”, “Heroic Vietnamese Mothers,” “Folk Song You and I,” “Beloved Hue,” and “Anchored at Native Port.”

An Thuyen’s energy for music was generated from a love for life. That love created An Thuyen’s music that joined the flow of folklore and academic culture, from which audiences can get a sense of lives and fates.

Listening to An Thuyen’s songs, audiences are caught by his warm feelings towards life, and find a passionate, loving and sharing An Thuyen.

He was presented the State Award for Literature and the Arts, Vietnam Music Association’s prizes and Defence Ministry’s prizes in recognition of his great contributions to the country’s music industry.
