The event, entitled “Republic of Korea (RoK): Traditional and Modern”, aims to promote RoK culture to Vietnamese artists and fine art students, contributing to facilitating cultural exchange and diversifying relations between the two countries.
Accordingly, Vietnamese painters under the age of 45 can submit one painting, regardless of materials and methods, to the organising committee’s email trungtamvanhoahanquoc@gmail.com between December 11, 2016 and February 11, 2017 for the preliminary round.
The results of the preliminary round will be announced on February 24, 2017. Those to advance will send their painting for the final round, directly or by post, to the Korean Cultural Centre at 49 Nguyen Du Street in Hanoi’s Hai Ba Trung District. The final results will be released on April 10, 2017.
The contest will be judged by Lee Dae Joong, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre; Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition Department; RoK artist Choi Bong-sik and Dean of the Vietnam Academy of Fine Arts Le Van Suu.
The organising committee will select 24 to 30 best entries for display in an exhibition slated for May 2017 at the Korean Culture Centre, and present prizes to the top three entries.
The first prize winner will have a chance to explore the RoK and organise an individual exhibition showcasing his or her artworks at the centre. The second-prize winner will enjoy a sight-seeing trip to the RoK and US$200, while the third-prize recipient will receive a cash prize of US$200.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at Hanoi’s Korean Cultural Centre in April 2017.
According to Lee Dae Joong, the contest is being held as the two countries are celebrating 25 years of bilateral diplomatic ties in 2017. He expressed his hope that the event would offer an occasion for artists of the two countries to share their understanding and multidimensional view about Vietnam and the RoK, thereby contributing to bringing their peoples closer together.
At the first edition of the contest last year, the organisers received a total of 74 entries which gave vivid manifestations of the RoK landscape, culture and people in the eyes of 74 Vietnamese painters.
Duong Ngoc Ha won the 2015 second prize for the work "Friends".
Ngo Van Sac was crowned the 2015 third prize winner with the painting "Dream".
