Positive signals about prospect of opening flights to and from Dien Bien

At the “Northwest-Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Connection” conference held in Dien Bien on September 20, Phan Nguyen Hong, Deputy Head of the Commercial-Passenger Department of Viet Nam Airlines, said that there are positive signals about the prospect of opening flights to and from Dien Bien, including the Ho Chi Minh City-Dien Bien route.

Dien Bien provincial leaders welcome tourists and representatives of ministries and branches at Dien Bien airport.

Affirming that the demand for transportation and tourism to Dien Bien is increasing, Hong cited: Currently, the Ha Noi-Dien Bien route is operated by Viet Nam Airlines with 11 flights/week with a seat utilisation rate of about 80%. In the first 8 months of 2025, nearly 100,000 passengers have arrived and departed from Dien Bien by air (an increase of 4% compared to the same period in 2024).

Sharing the same opinion with the representative of Viet Nam Airlines, the representative of Saigontourist also said that the tourism connection by air and road from Ho Chi Minh City to the Northwestern provinces (including Dien Bien) is increasingly convenient.

However, to better meet the travel needs of tourists from Ho Chi Minh City to the Northwestern provinces, having an additional flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Dien Bien is more convenient so that tourists have more choices.

However, to open and exploit a new flight route requires many conditions; in which the factor of travel needs is very important. Therefore, Viet Nam Airlines has identified this as a long-term development orientation and is ready to open the route when there is synchronous support in terms of policies, market stimulation and ensuring operational efficiency.

Currently, Viet Nam Airlines is the only airline operating the route from Ha Noi to Dien Bien and vice versa.
