In the past few days Kalmaegi brought heavy rains and flooding to thousands of hectares of crops and caused severe damages to aquaculture farms. Impacts from the storm killed at least 12 people, while one is still missing.
In Quang Ninh province, 147 houses lost their roofs and nearly 5,000ha of rice fields were flooded, causing total damage worth VND20 billion.
In Ha Nam, widespread rainfall of 64-83 mm inundated over 15,000 ha of rice. Many areas in Thai Binh province were flooded due to heavy rains.
Lang Son province evacuated over 3,000 households living alongside Ky Cung River. Heavy rains caused landslides that disrupted traffic in several areas in the locality.
Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) said the typhoon severely damaged local power transmission networks, cutting off over 289,000 customers.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7am on September 17, the storm weakened to a low pressure area with winds of less than 39kph after crossing into the northwestern mountainous provinces.
The centre warned localities to keep a close watch on the development of flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous and midland areas in days to come.
