Earlier, on July 10, the provincial Steering Committee for the Search, Recovery and Identification of Martyrs’ Remains held a workshop to verify and conclude information relating to martyrs and martyrs’ graves in the Cau Nhi area. Following the workshop, Team 584, Team 589, the Political Department of the Provincial Military Command and relevant forces conducted surveys and expanded the search to locations showing potential signs of burial sites.
The remains were found at depths ranging from 20cm to 50cm, together with personal artefacts.
Preliminary information indicates that the remains belong to soldiers of Battalion 6, Regiment 88, Division 308 who were killed in May 1972.
The 13 sets of remains have been transferred to the Martyrs’ Memorial Temple of Regiment 88, Division 308 in the Cau Nhi area of Nam Hai Lang Commune, where they are being respectfully cared for in accordance with regulations. The relevant authorities will take biological samples for DNA testing to help identify the martyrs.
Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee Le Hong Vinh and a working delegation on August 4 visited the site to inspect operations, encourage personnel and present gifts to members of Team 584, Team 589 and other forces engaged in the search and recovery mission.
Le Hong Vinh commended the dedication, responsibility and efforts demonstrated by the participating forces, while calling on them to continue thoroughly surveying the area and making effective use of available information to expand the search. He also stressed the need to ensure absolute safety throughout the operation and strive for the best possible results in the search and recovery of martyrs’ remains.
