Opportunities for Viet Nam to advance circular economy in manufacturing

On the afternoon of June 11, the Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC), the German Business Association in Viet Nam (GBA), and the Ho Chi Minh City Supporting Industries Association (HASI) jointly organised the Germany–Viet Nam Business Forum 2026 under the theme “Circular economy in manufacturing.”

At the event, experts noted that as the country’s economic powerhouse and Viet Nam’s largest manufacturing and commercial centre, Ho Chi Minh City is in a position to shape its next generation of growth based on the principles of the circular economy, green transformation and sustainable manufacturing.

In a context where global supply chains are increasingly prioritising standards related to emissions reduction, resource efficiency and resilience, the competitiveness of manufacturing hubs will no longer be determined solely by costs but by the quality of growth and the capacity for innovation.

Ho Chi Minh City is actively promoting policies that support businesses in their green transition, the development of eco-industrial parks and improved resource efficiency, thereby laying the groundwork for the large-scale implementation of circular economy models.

Alexander Ziehe, Chairman of GBA in Viet Nam stated that Viet Nam, especially Ho Chi Minh City, has a valuable opportunity to integrate circular economy principles from the next stage of industrial development.

“The development of sustainable supply chains, the enhancement of domestic supplier capabilities and the promotion of technology transfer will enable Vietnamese enterprises to participate more deeply in global value chains,” Alexander Ziehe said.

He also noted that German companies stand ready to support Viet Nam not only as investors but also as long-term partners in industrial development and innovation.

According to experts, for German businesses operating in Viet Nam, the circular economy is no longer merely a sustainability initiative but has become a strategic approach to strengthening competitiveness and expanding market access.
