Viet Nam aligns with international efforts for sustainable peace in Gaza

Nearly two years after the outbreak of conflict in the Gaza Strip, the Peace Plan initiative proposed by US President Donald Trump has introduced a new international mechanism aimed at promoting a ceasefire, reconstruction, and moving towards a long-term solution to the Israel-Palestine issue.

Having accepted the invitation to participate in the Gaza Board of Peace, Viet Nam affirmed its consistent commitment to supporting conflict resolution through peaceful means in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

In recent years, the Middle East has remained one of the most unstable regions in the world, with prolonged and complex armed conflicts, particularly the Israel-Palestine conflict. Persistent violence has not only caused heavy human losses but also widespread economic, social, and regional security consequences.

Although the international community has implemented many reconciliation and engagement initiatives at multiple levels, these efforts have faced numerous challenges in forming an effective and sustainable mechanism capable of both genuinely ending conflicts and ensuring comprehensive and long-term post-conflict reconstruction.

In this context, at the end of September 2025, nearly two years after the conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted, causing one of the largest humanitarian disasters in modern history for the Palestinian people, US President Donald Trump proposed a 20-point peace plan.

Shortly after, on October 9, 2025, Israel and Hamas reached a “Phase 1” ceasefire agreement under the peace plan.

On November 17, 2025, the UN Security Council voted to adopt Resolution 2803, endorsing President Trump’s peace plan; it welcomed the establishment of the Board of Peace as a transitional mechanism to manage reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, with civil and security presence authorised by the Security Council until December 31, 2027.

On January 22, 2026, President Donald Trump presided over the signing ceremony of the Board of Peace Charter in Davos, Switzerland. The US plans to hold the first leaders’ conference on February 19, 2026, which will also serve as a fundraising event for Gaza’s reconstruction.

The peace plan and the Gaza Board of Peace proposed by President Trump are considered the most feasible initiative since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, providing an opportunity for stakeholders to engage in dialogue and negotiations to end the conflict and work towards a sustainable peace solution for the region.

On January 16, President Donald Trump sent a letter to General Secretary To Lam, inviting him and Viet Nam to participate in the Gaza Board of Peace as a founding member state, joining the international community in promoting a sustainable peace solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict in the Gaza Strip.

In response, General Secretary To Lam emphasised Viet Nam’s consistent position in supporting and being ready to contribute to international efforts to resolve conflicts and disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, respecting the fundamental rights of all parties involved.

Viet Nam considers the establishment of the Board of Peace a necessary step to implement the Gaza peace plan endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2803 on November 17, 2025, which welcomed UN member states’ participation in the Board of Peace to promote peace, humanitarian relief, and reconstruction in Gaza.

In this spirit, General Secretary To Lam accepted the invitation to join the Board of Peace, confirming that Viet Nam is ready to participate as a founding member state, cooperating with the US and the international community to actively contribute to a comprehensive and lasting solution for the Middle East peace process, including the establishment of a Palestinian state coexisting peacefully alongside Israel.

On January 22, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the signing ceremony of the Board of Peace Charter on ending the Gaza conflict, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, at the invitation of President Donald Trump.

In the same letter, General Secretary To Lam suggested that Viet Nam and the US continue to cooperate in promoting the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries towards more substantial and effective development, enhancing cooperation across various fields according to the priorities and needs of both sides, based on mutual respect, ensuring the legitimate interests of each nation, and actively contributing to peace, cooperation, and development in the region and globally.
