The 9000-DWT vessel arrived at Vinh Tan Port on July 17, carrying heavy equipment for the construction of the Vinh Tan 4 extension thermal power plant.
Vinh Tan is a deep-water port and is the first seaport to be invested in and operated by a private domestic company, the Vinh Tan International Port Co. Ltd. It is also the first commercial seaport in Binh Thuan province.
According to the company’s general director Ha Quoc Hung, the new port will provide direct access to the South Central and Central Highlands regions for the cargo ships carrying heavy equipment for industrial and energy projects in these regions.
Previously, such vessels had to unload their goods at ports in Ho Chi Minh City or Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.
Vinh Tan Port covers a total area of 140 hectares and was built at a cost of VND2.3 trillion (US$98.9 million). Its largest wharf can receive ships of up to 70,000 DWT.
The port is designed to handle 8 million tonnes of cargo per year.
