435 billion VND to be invested in construction of Yen Binh inland waterway port in Thai Nguyen

According to the plan, construction will begin on October 29 on the Yen Binh cargo handling port complex on the Cau River — the largest inland waterway port in Thai Nguyen. With an investment of over 435 billion VND (16.82 million USD), the project is scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2027. It aims to enhance freight transport via inland waterways, connecting Thai Nguyen with other provinces, cities, and the port of Hai Phong.

The Yen Binh cargo handling port complex is located in the Mom Kieu area of Trung Thanh Ward, spanning 24.92 hectares — comprising 10.05 hectares of water surface on the Cau River and 14.87 hectares of land. It is designed with a throughput capacity of 3.8 to 4.5 million tonnes per year.

A representative of the project developer, Thang Long Investment, Construction, and Mineral Exploitation Joint Stock Company, stated that the port complex features a ship lock and robust, durable infrastructure. These elements are designed to avoid disrupting the flow of the Cau River — even during flood seasons — while allowing vessels of several thousand tonnes to enter and exit the port safely and efficiently.

The developer has committed to ensuring that the port’s facilities — including berths for cargo vessels and handling equipment — are built and installed as a modern, integrated system. The complex will utilise green energy, remain environmentally friendly, and adhere to the established construction schedule.

The road network in the southern part of Thai Nguyen Province is being planned and integrated with the Yen Binh cargo terminal to facilitate the efficient movement of goods — particularly heavy, bulky items such as ores, coal, steel billets, iron and steel products, construction materials, and timber.

Once operational, this terminal — along with the Da Phuc port on the Cong River — will help unlock the potential of inland waterway transport. River shipping offers significant advantages for moving large volumes of cargo cost-effectively, connecting Thai Nguyen with ports along the Cau and Thuong Rivers — extending through Bac Ninh, Ha Noi, and Hai Phong — and providing access to the sea in both directions.
