Viet Nam approves 36 trillion VND to expand Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong–My Thuan Expressway

Viet Nam has approved an investment of more than 36 trillion VND (1.36 billion USD) to expand the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong–My Thuan Expressway, a key transport axis that is expected to boost regional connectivity, ease congestion, and enhance the development of the southern economic corridor.

The Ministry of Construction on December 3 endorsed the project under the public–private partnership (PPP) model using a Build–Operate–Transfer (BOT) contract.

Classified as a special-grade transport project, the expansion plays a strategic role in completing transport infrastructure for the southern key economic region and the Mekong Delta.

The total investment includes more than 20.77 trillion VND for construction and around 5.09 trillion VND for compensation, support, and resettlement. The expressway expansion aims to accommodate rising transport demand between the southwest provinces, Ho Chi Minh City, the southeast region, major economic hubs, and international gateways and seaports, while also creating space for regional development and supporting national defence and security.

The expressway will extend 96.13 km across Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, and Dong Thap. The Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong section will be expanded in phases to eight lanes, designed for 120 km/h with a 41m roadbed. The Trung Luong–My Thuan and An Thai Trung–My Thuan 2 Bridge (north approach) sections will be upgraded to six lanes, designed for 100 km/h with a 32.25m roadbed.

Construction is planned from 2025 to 2028, with a toll-recovery period of about 17 years and three months. The project requires approximately 1,070 ha of land, including more than 120 ha needing additional clearance.

The plan also covers the construction and upgrading of 66 bridges as well as the installation of an intelligent transport system (ITS), non-stop electronic tolling, and vehicle weight-control facilities.
